Right from the start

The Arjowiggins policy on pulp procurement gives priority to the proper management of forests, relying on FSC®-certified pulp.

Certification of the Arjowiggins Le Bourray factory

  • ISO 14001: our first certification, obtained back in 1999, a testimony to our commitment.
  • FSC®: new certification obtained in June 2008.
  • European Ecolable on tissue since 2011.
  • Food contact.

Conservation of natural resources

From start to finish, our top priorities in production are reduction of our water consumption, and optimization of effluent treatment and the recycling process to reduce consumption of raw materials and energy. In twenty years, we have halved the amount of water that we use to produce a tonne of tissue. Our paper mill also has a highly efficient waste-water treatment unit, so that the water that we return to the natural environment complies with the strictest standards.

Reduced carbon emissions

Reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are achieved in three ways:

  1. reasonable installed power corresponding to our technological choices
  2. waste heat recovery from fluids
  3. variation of speeds.

Manufacture of a 100% biodegradable product

Tissue is made from cellulose fibres, that is to say, from wood. Its biodegradable character thus needs no further proof. Further, its biodegradation rate (degradation kinetics) is greatly superior to that of non-woven airlaid-type products.

Waste management

The production of cellulose tissue generates very little waste, as the material is recycled linearly. In total, less than one tonne of sludge is produced per day. Nevertheless, even this small quantity is recovered and used for composting, manuring or briquette-making.

Forest Stewardship Council®

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) is an ecolabel awarded to products made of wood or wood derivatives, and certifies that they are sourced from forests meeting strict criteria of responsible management.

The criteria ensure appropriate ecological management that is socially beneficial and economically viable, and thus in a position to meet the needs of present and future generations.

The FSC® label, embodying as it does the three aspects of environmental, social and economic quality and performance, is considered to be not just an ecolabel, but an eco-social label.

FSC® is recognized by Greenpeace and the WWF as the sole certification that is credible and operational at international level today.

We obtained FSC® certification for our tissue in 2008.

What is “traceability chain” (or CoC – Chain Of Custody) certification?

The traceability chain is the organization of resources set up at each stage of the conversion or commercialization of a product to ensure that the material is sourced from certified forests. In our business sector, the traceability chain starts with forest management and extends to the end converter.

The retailer then need only submit a request to FSC® to be able to use the brand, his invoices constituting written proof.

European Ecolabel

The Arjowiggins Le Bourray factory is certified for its production of coated paper and for some tissues, notably Kaleïdo.

Created in 1992, the EU Ecolabel is the only ecological label managed at European level. It can be used in all European Union member countries, and is issued in France by AFNOR Certification, an independent certification organization. The EU Ecolabel is obtained by a voluntary process of certification of products and services.

The criteria applicable for the EU Ecolabel are defined and revised every 4 to 5 years by a committee of European experts. Verification is carried out by national certification bodies.

The EU Ecolabel is based on an approach using multiple criteria relating to Life-Cycle Analysis. It guarantees both a high level of environmental performance and optimum technical characteristics in use.

The criteria on which the EU Ecolabel is based are as follows:

– emissions into the atmosphere (SO2, NOX)
– emissions of greenhouse gases
– emissions into water (DCO, P, AOX)
– consumption of electricity
– selection of raw materials to ensure that they contain no substances hazardous to health or the environment
– waste generated.

Continuous Improvement Process

Arjowiggins Le Bourray puts into daily application a management system covering all actions relating to Quality, Health and Safety, the Environment and Energy.

Based on the principle of continuous improvement, it is audited every year and certified according to international standards of good practice (ISO 14001, ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001, ISO 50001).
